The Importance of Purpose

In my last post I wrote that my eye-tracking computer crashed and I was without a computer for three weeks. I also mentioned that MDA was nice enough to lend me the computer I’m now using until I can obtain a replacement. As I said, I am very thankful to MDA for lending equipment and for everything else they do. This isn’t a complaint, it’s just a statement of fact; like me, this computer is old and extremely slow. It is so slow that technical support recommended that I not add any programs (I am typing this post as an email because I thought adding Microsoft Word might kill the computer). So having to learn the new system and having many other limitations has challenged my patience.

For “normal” people, having a broken computer for any period of time would be an inconvenience. But imagine how much more inconvenient that would be if you didn’t have a smart phone or access to any other computer. Now imagine that you’re bound and gagged and for three weeks the only thing you could do was listen to audio books or watch TV. That pretty much describes what my time without a computer was like.

My nephew, Patrick, using his communication device

367 My nephew, Patrick, using his communication device

I know that the technology revolution has brought about many negatives for society. The Internet and smart phones have turned many people into social misfits. Even among family and friends, many people now retreat into their own little world of texting or playing games on their phones. But technology has been a true blessing for those with physical and/or mental challenges – people like me and my Autistic nephew.

Since ALS began to paralyze me, I gradually began spending more and more time on the computer. After it became impossible for me to use a standard computer (16 years ago), I discovered software that would allow me to control the computer using a “head mouse.” It is a little box with a beam of light that tracked a mirror-like sticker attached to the front of a cap I would wear. I could move the cursor and type by simply making slight head movements. This system worked well for about four years until my neck started getting too weak to hold my big head up. I was so determined to make it work that I bought a neck brace and, if I had Mary adjust the brace just right, I could still make slight head movements. That worked alright until one day my chin slipped off the front of the brace and I almost choked to death.

It was then that I discovered eye-tracking computers. Instead of a beam of light following a sticker on my cap, eye-tracking computers have a camera that follows eye movements – no neck brace needed! After getting used to using the eye-tracking computer, I was able to use my computer to read the Bible and books, listen to audio books or music, type emails and surf the web, etc. I gradually felt confident enough to volunteer as an Internet Missionary with Global Media Outreach. Then I started this blog.

Even after all these years of using this technology, it still amazes me that we are living in a day when a completely paralyzed person, someone that cannot even speak, can still text and email family and friends and communicate with people all over the world. I appreciate this technology so much more after going three weeks without it. I am really looking forward to getting my new computer so I’ll be able to once again type in Word, read the Bible/books, work with with Global Media Outreach and everything else I was able to do with my other computer.

I had a lot of time to think over those three boring weeks. I realized that, other than a few days of being sick or in the hospital, I’ve never really watched daytime TV and I now know that I wasn’t missing anything. After a while, the TV became more annoying than my mother-in-law’s white noise machine!

My whole adult life, even with the extreme fatigue of ALS, I’ve always been an early riser. I envied people who could sleep-in and take naps. During the time I was without a computer, one of the first things I realized was that I’ve always gotten out of bed early because I had a purpose for doing so. If I was just going to listen to an audio book or watch TV, I could do that from the comfort of my bed. I began losing my desire to even get out of bed and became kind of depressed.

Over the years I’ve learned to look for the lessons in every challenge I face, and this challenge taught me about the importance of purpose. Ilearned that a lack of purpose, or not being able to fulfill your purpose, is a big cause of depression. I also believe that God has a purpose for everyone, even for the “least of us.”

Purpose: the feeling of being determined to do or achieve something: the aim or goal of a person: what a person is trying to do, become, etc.

In 1 Corinthians chapter 12, Paul uses the human body as an analogy for the body of Christ (the Church): “But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired…there are many members, but one body…the members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary…” (1 Corinthians 12:18-22). That is so encouraging to “weaker” members like me.

Our purpose doesn’t have to be great, by man’s standards, but I don’t believe it’s possible to live with joy, peace and hope without feeling like you’re giving others a reason to have joy, peace and hope. God’s purposes for us always involve the betterment of others. If you don’t know God’s purpose for you, begin helping and encouraging others. Ultimately this is His purpose for all of us.

About Bill Sweeney

In 1996, at the age of 36, I was diagnosed with ALS. The neurologist gave me 3-5 years to live. 24 years later... :-) I'm completely paralyzed and unable to speak. By God's grace and the great care of my wife, I'm still here. I live to encourage and give hope to others going through difficult times.

You find hope, lessons and courage in everything you do and share that with the world.
the Kingdom judges so differently to the way the world judges, and I know that you know this, and so I say Mighty Man of God you ARE strong and noble and noteworthy and your impact is resounding through the chambers of eternity for the King’s Glory.

  5. Hello Bill! What a great post about the ‘three longest weeks of your life’ (ugh), and the vital role that purpose plays in our lives. Proverbs says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish…” Prov. 29:18

I was wondering if you make use of an audio Bible? I found this one: http://www.bible.is/ENGKJV/Gen/1
I prefer reading, (which this site has a very comfortable typography for me), but I’m noticing that it’s a very different experience to listen to it. Perhaps we use a different part of our brain to process information with our ears.

Great Peace be to you and yours. 🙂 Beth

I do have the Bible on CD and on Itunes. But, like you, I prefer reading the Bible. I think my brain is slow – I ponder something I’ve heard and I completely blank out on the passage that follows 🙂 I do enjoy audio books though.

  9. Loss of a sense of purpose, however small, is my greatest fear. I try to remember
that there is purpose in all that God allows into my life, not just in what I am able to accomplish. At the end, Jesus lost all ministry and was helpless, but in accepting even that and letting it go, his dying became life for him and for all of us.

I could never see any purpose in my mother’s fourteen years of dying by inches with Alzheimer’s, particularly the last years when she was comatose, but several times God reassured me that someday I would understand the reason and that “Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal.”

I am grateful for all that you share and the grace I receive through it. You are in my heart and in my prayers. I thank God for you.

I am glad to hear from you again. We were gone for some time in Florida in March so I am a little behind on responding. Today my goal is to address some of the things on my desk. I enjoy hearing your works of encouragement. Always looking to the positive in your situations. As the process of ageing and living with polio since 6 1/2 months old I need encouragement some days. The challenging are there more everyday in my ability to do all the things I love to do. It takes a long longer and I can only imagine how time is slow for you in your tasks keep inspiring people. My husband’s sister lost her battle against ALS in 1994. She didn’t have the technology that is available now. We were able to communicate with her using a ABC board and she would blink when we were on the right letter. Now it is a lot easier for you to communicate with 1,000’s of people. Keep up your good work. You are a Blessing.

Nice to hear from you again. By now you probably have your new computer. My husbands sister lost her battle with ALS in 1994. Only three years she struggled. You are so blessed to continue with “purpose” and can inspire others to have purpose. As the aging process and living with polio challenge me everyday I need to be reminded that I too have a purpose. To make someone else’s life a little bit better everyday. As spring is starting to arrive in Minnesota, I look forward to the warmth of those summer days. It has been a very long winter. Also I look forward to sharing my words of encouragement to sixth grade students in local schools. Bullying is a topic that I enjoy. When I was in seventh grade the bullying, then probably called teasing, took place. I remember how I felt and how I handled it. I want kids to know that it is alright to be different and that it is not alright to treat someone that is different differently. Keep up your great work and God’s Blessings to you. Linda

Nothing to do, no one to see, everyone carrying on with their lives as if I’m already gone. Now what I wana say to you, is get Pastor Larry Huch’s book “Free at last” (generational curses) and I do hope somehow that is possible, or just get someone to read it and pray all of that over you:) time for miracles has not ended, I am one. I am sooo sure you’re entire life as it is will change if those prayers are prayed right there with you. I hope really hope it will be possible. Will be praying this side. And for the new laptop to arrive asap:) I’m amazed. God bless you!

  28. Hi Bill. Your description of purpose, and how it affects our life, our attitude, and ultimately our desire to even participate, are right on. In my ministry I have noticed the people who persistently battle depression are the ones who seem to have no purpose to their life. This concept illustrates rivers of living water…when we receive stuff we need to give stuff to keep everything flowing and not get all clogged up. I applaud your ability to find ways, despite your incredible limitations, to keep the stream moving through your own life. God bless!

The way you handle your trials is such an illustration of 1 Corinthians 4-8:

    “Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
    Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have…
    doesn’t strut…
    doesn’t have a swelled head…
    doesn’t force itself on others…
    isn’t always “me first,”
    doesn’t fly off the handle…
    love trusts God always,
    always looks for the best,
    never looks back,
but keeps going to the end.”
Then St. Paul goes on to write, “Love never dies…” (1 Cor.13:8)

All your suffering on this earth is reproducing Christ’s love in you and in your beautiful writing.
I am so inspired by your precious faith. You are a living epistle etched with the love of Christ.
Your life is a shining light leading others to the living God.
The bible promises in the book of Daniel that those who lead others to God will shine like the stars forever.
You and your family are daily in my prayers.

    • I can relate, Christine. Now that you mention it, I think my three weeks without a computer would have been less depressing if the weather would have been nice enough for me to at least sit outside and listen to audio books…

‘Social misfits.’ Nice, one word I use often as well. Yet in another way, people would use the same word regarding we who who cast an eye toward heaven and believe in the unseen.

That’s ok, there will come a day when faith will be sight, and we can then rejoice in He who WILL make all things new.

But you are spot on as to purpose, and even the most unseemly of us can be useful to the Master 🙂

    • Wow, Diane, that is SO thoughtful!!! My insurance didn’t cover the cost of the computer and I was about to give up on the idea of even getting one, BUT God, like so many times before, intervened and the computer is 100% paid for! We ordered it last Friday.
Thank you for your generous offer!

  70. Amen! I especially like when you said this,”Our purpose doesn’t have to be great, by man’s standards, but I don’t believe it’s possible to live with joy, peace and hope without feeling like you’re giving others a reason to have joy, peace and hope.”

It reminds me of the three essentials for life as said by Joseph Addison, “Three grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.” Is there anything we, your readers, can do to help you?

    Bill,

Thanks for what you shared in this post. Now that I know more about the advanced stage of your ALS, the words you share through your blog have even more meaning for me. I now realize just how much time it takes you to write a post or reply to a comment whether it be on your blog or a comment on mine. Your sharing this morning really touched my heart. Thank you the view into your world.

    Your brother in Christ,
    Patrick

  75. Thank you for reminding me of how important technology can be, that it can be a lifesaver. I often disparage it! Don’t really like computers. But it’s true, they can serve a higher purpose to really help people, and I often forget that. I guess God is just in everything! Right? And I don’t look at you as “the least” of us. Truly, you are an advanced soul that is helping people. I think it’s awesome that you are doing a global media outreach. You may not even know how many people you reach, but your courage and your strength are amazing to me. And I am grateful to have made your acquaintance on God’s highway. I guess that’s 1 way of looking at the internet. Many blessings!

  76. Excellent post, Bill! You are certainly an encouragement to me. The fact that you continue to minister is a testimony to the fact that our Lord has everything to do with modern technology whether we acknowledge Him or not. Otherwise we would not be able to read your posts and be edified by them. Thank you! Looking forward to your next one.

  79. Great post Bill, although I don’t know my purpose I do enjoy helping people. I am fortunate enough to at least have a part time job that allows me to do that. Though I don’t know how much I help them there is the occasion when some of the people I am helping let me know I did so there is no greater feeling in the world at least to me anyway.
