Pressing On

Happy New Year!

I believe 2020 will be a great year.

Regular readers of my blog know that I’ve had ALS for twenty-three years. I’ve been on hospice for the last fifteen months, and in that time, I’ve had three close encounters with death. I don’t mean to make light of this, but I think you could say that I have one foot in the grave, and the other is on a banana peel. Knowing this, and reading that I’ve declared that 2020 is going to be a great year, you might be questioning the state of my mental health. I get it, but please hear me out.

I’ll admit that my mental health is not as good as it once was. I recently watched a movie for twenty minutes before realizing I’d seen it before. I don’t know if this is related to the ALS or just getting old. Regardless, I have total recall when it comes to the suffering that Mary and I have endured throughout this protracted trial. If the new year holds more suffering for me, bring it on! I am putting suffering on notice – you will not steal my peace, joy, and hope! If suffering results in my death this year, suffering still loses:

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” (Romans 8:18).

I’ve made plans and goals for the new year – I’m pressing on!

“Whatever things were gain to me (my health, career, my ability to breathe on my own, eat and speak, and walk…), those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ…” (Philippians 3:7-8).

I feel sorry for those who have all of their hopes invested in the things of this world. I hope and pray that my simple posts might draw them to Christ, and the Unshakable Hope that comes along with making a commitment to follow Him. That would be a great bonus for the time and effort I spend pecking out these posts on my eye-tracking computer. However, I feel called to encourage those going through difficult times. I think these are the people who can relate to my posts. I’m rededicating myself to this calling for 2020.

It’s kind of funny, but, in a sense, I feel that my body, which was perfectly healthy for the first thirty-six years of my life, has since been betraying me. I realize, of course, this isn’t the case, but I allow myself to believe this to motivate me. It’s payback time now – I’m going to punish this body by using every bit of the strength and energy left in it! The common sports metaphor for this is “leaving it all on the field.” I was on the swim team in high school, so in my case, it would be leaving it all in the pool. The Apostle Paul liked to use sports metaphors. In 1st Corinthians chapter 9, he compares the Christian life to running a race. Being very familiar with Greece, he was likely referring to the Olympics. He tells us to make our body “our slave” and “run in such a way that you may win.” Notice that in the following passage, Paul uses the phrase “press on” two times:

“Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:12-14).

I hope you’ll join me in “forgetting what lies behind” “press on” to what lies ahead.

Happy New Year!

About Bill Sweeney

In 1996, at the age of 36, I was diagnosed with ALS. The neurologist gave me 3-5 years to live. 24 years later... :-) I'm completely paralyzed and unable to speak. By God's grace and the great care of my wife, I'm still here. I live to encourage and give hope to others going through difficult times.

  4. I just felt the need to check in with you today Bill and tell you what a light you have been in my life. I am so honored to know you. To feel as if I have met your family and visited your home, and felt your faith first hand when I needed it most. And I am only one of many, men and women, youth and strangers. Funny, I don’t think of myself as a stranger to you. Though we have never met, I feel as if we have. And yet I can’t even remember how I stumbled into your front door and first read your powerful words that shook me out of some dark hole of me feeling sorry for myself. I am sorry to say I haven’t risen above falling in those dark holes sometimes, still, but I just wanted you to know, I have sent so many people here to just wander through your words of love and wisdom. I love that we are family in Christ and that you are my friend. I am not sure why I felt the need to say all this today. I know this post is almost a month old. But just wanted to chat with you and let you know, how truly appreciated you are! Thank you for always being HIS Vessel and my encourager!
May God bless you today! And may you feel His presence this year!

  5. You are an inspiration to me. Please stay in touch fellow brother in Christ. I would love to hear more about your walk with the Lord and how he has strengthened you. Please keep fighting the good fight and remember that you have salvation. You are saved! You will spend eternity in heaven with Christ Jesus and this life is just temporary. We are only sojourners in this wilderness. This world is owned by Satan and his cohorts. Remember that you are not of the flesh even though you are still in the flesh. I know you know all of these things but I am writing you a letter of encouragement. You have another Christian brother praying for you. God bless you Bill.

  6. So motivating, Bill! Interestingly, Philippians 3:12-14 is a passage I recite at least twice a week; I loved hearing in the context of your journey. Also, I’ve referenced Romans 8:18 in my prayers numerous times with you in mind, dear brother.

  9. I love your courage and faith, not to mention perseverance! I think of you often as a barometer for long suffering in the face of illness. I’ve had some health challenges since October, so you’ve inspired me. I love what God is doing with illness. He uses every bit of bad for outstanding good. I’ve taken to declaring “Pain is my friend. I rejoice in suffering because Jesus suffered for me. I’m healed by his stripes in his perfect timing. I will wait patiently for Him.” This is part of my daily declarations, but also when I’m in pain or exhaustion and feeling frustrated or discouraged. Thank you for all I’ve learned from you. Your illness has not be wasted at al,l and I believe you will have a great 2020 whether here or with Jesus!

  12. Hi, Bill!

Your analogy with the sports metaphor (leaving it all on the field) hooked me bigtime. I agree–whether we have ALS or other human infirmities, that’s no reason not to go all-out. Especially as we reach the end of the race! Kudos for a race well-run, and for your ability and perseverance in putting so much of it into writing. Not just the historical details, but the landscape of your life and your family’s life with ALS. Happy New Year to all of you!

Now I’m going to see whether the Philly Eagles know how to leave it all on the field today! 🙂

  17. Thank you Bill, for a wonderfully encouraging and inspirational post. The title reminds me of so much. Any real Christian begins identifying with the sentiment of Paul’s eternal words early on in his or her walk. They are also special to me because of the great news 40 years ago that Bob Dylan gave his heart to the Lord. He wrote some great music in that time so long ago now, and one of them was his take on that passage in Philippians. His music from the album isn’t available but this choir does a great job. Be blessed Bill and Mary:

  22. How encouraging is this! I was just doing my daily devotional (thank you and Mary again for it) and it was also talking about forgetting the past and staying close to God for the plans he has made for us in this coming year. I was just praying to get through the holidays without going insane, trying to map out my new life, but then I just found that stepping back and not trying to force anything new, I had more peace and calm and was able to enjoy Christmas and the New Year on my own knowing that the Lord was with me, calming me, every step of the way. Thank you for your “pressing on”. I look upon your blog as an encouragement and hope in my journey. Thank you again. I pray you will press on and soar beyond your wildest dreams! Love to you and Mary…and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  27. “We ought not to rest content in the mists of the valley when the summit of Tabor awaits us. How pure are the dews of the hills, how fresh is the mountain air, how rich the fare of the dwellers aloft, whose windows look into the New Jerusalem!

Many saints are content to live like men in coal mines, who see not the sun. Tears mar their faces when they might anoint them with celestial oil. Satisfied I am that many a believer pines in a dungeon when he might walk on the palace roof, and view the goodly land and Lebanon. Rouse thee, O believer, from thy low condition! Cast away thy sloth, thy lethargy, thy coldness, or whatever interferes with thy chaste and pure love to Christ. Make Him the source, the center, and the circumference of all thy soul’s range of delight. Rest no longer satisfied with thy dwarfish attainments. Aspire to a higher, a nobler, a fuller life. Upward to heaven! Nearer to God! —Spurgeon

“I want to scale the utmost height,
    And catch a gleam of glory bright;
But still I’ll pray, till heaven I’ve found,
Lord, lead me on to higher ground!”

Not many of us are living at our best. We linger in the lowlands because we are afraid to climb the mountains. The steepness and ruggedness dismay us, and so we stay in the misty valleys and do not learn the mystery of the hills. We do not know what we lose in our self-indulgence, what glory awaits us if only we had courage for the mountain climb, what blessing we should find if only we would move to the uplands of God. —J. R. M

“Too low they build who build beneath the stars.”

This earth quickly fades as this life’s brevity runs its course. We all have but a short time to turn the sands of earth into heaven’s pavement. The God of all righteousness renders to each the eternal compensations for the trials endured.

“Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy”
    James 5:11

May the “End of the Lord” be your portion in the present as it surely is to be in the life to come.

I am sorry that your health isn’t the best but it does sound like you have good people in your life who love you. I’m the opposite. My health is pretty good but I seem to lack nice people who actually care. That’s one reason I follow your blog, you are a nice person! I did meet this girl Rose whom I get along with really well. I tell her my problems and she says, People are nasty. I think she’s right. For the most part, they are. Every now and then, you find a nice one. I’m trying to build a support network as I lack social support. I see myself as being too nice a person, nice no matter what and that has to stop because then I’m just a victim for abuse. I think if I go in to any new relationship realizing it could just be another nasty person I will be pleasantly surprised when they’re not. Take care.

  29. Dear Bill and Mary,
“Press on” you say. “Press On” indeed! Everyday, when I say my prayers and I speak out the names of those that I lift up to God, I literally pause when I come to you and Mary, because it’s like the fog clears when I speak your names and I can see everything from a different perspective, a little clearer, where priorities take on a new clarity. And I was feeling a little heavy with what lies ahead for my wife and I, physical and mental limitations are definitely increasing and the diminishment of our strength and endurance are becoming more self evident. Yet, in spite of these observations, we continue to be given grace for each single day and His grace is a continuous testimony to God, of His enduring love.

And then, this day, right at the start of this New Year, you write this post (which in itself is amazing) and the fog lifts once again. There is of course, no way in which I could ever come to truly understand what the two of you have and do endure, but I can tell you that it matters, it matters greatly. The two of you are beacons, that shine light for the rest of us to see and I am so grateful for the testimony that you live. God only knows what lies before us all this coming year but regardless of what it is, He is more than able to bring us home to Himself and ultimately, because He the very essence of love, that is what it is all about. Because of His love, we have been redeemed through His Son.

So I’m hoping you stay with us all a little longer, because I selfishly need the light that the two of you give, but if you don’t, we understand and we will rejoice that you are home. One day, one glorious day, we who believe and trust in God shall all stand together and praise God in His glory. But in the interim, I just wanted to say Thank You, thank you for the light that the two of you give and for encouraging all of us to “press on”. Somehow, what lies ahead, just got a little brighter.

God’s continued grace and blessings to you and yours for this New Year.

  32. What an awesome post, Bill. I know about leaving things. I just gave up my three times a week mall walking. I miss the fellowship. Although I’ve pushed myself to eat as much as I can, I am now into tube feeding for the majority of my nutrition. I don’t mind it except I do love the taste of food, especially chocolate. You’ve been on this road and for everything we leave behind, there are more amazing things to take their place. Maybe not right away, but it’s coming. It’s the ‘waiting for’ that’s hard.
I hope 2020 is a great year for both of us.

Then gratitude kicks in unless we have the blessing of learning grace, generally from someone who has found victory over loss. Thank you. By the way, I have read many chapters of a book, and been way more than 20 minutes into a movie before realizing I’d read/ seen it before. I’m not worried. Happy New Year to you and yours!🎆

They are being written for prisoners or anyone struggling with strongholds, imprisoned without bars. Each book stands alone complete by itself, but when read together they flow as one as well. Even though I know the messages well, I was in tears when I read them through. The Lord’s compassion and love is revealed so strong through the messages, I was overwhelmed. I can’t hardly wait to get them done!
Thanks for asking, as you can see I am pretty excited about it 🙂

  68. What an outlook you have. Although it IS very inspiring, I’m struggling to do the same. MY struggles aren’t physical, more like a struggle with depression and feeling like a failure at everything. Thank you, though, for being so strong so that others will see they can conquer anything when we cling to His Word.

  72. You have already left a legacy and path for others to follow! Well done. I envy you because you seem so close to your finish line, which is only the beginning of an unimaginable glory. May the peace of God that passes all understanding be and abide with you until Christ comes to take you home.

  73. Bill, thank you for starting our year with such profound observations and thoughts. Your insights and priorities – and your way with words (“I have one foot in the grave, and the other is on a banana peel.”) are proof enough to me that your mental ability isn’t going anywhere! My admiration goes out to you for being able to do what few people can do – see our bodies in the light of eternity. They are not our enemies, but neither are they to be relied upon. I know of no one who knows that better than you do.
Blessings in the new year, and as always, I look forward to meeting you. 😉
