Having the Right Perspective

I’ve discovered how essential it is to keep things in perspective in order to maintain hope when you’re in the midst of a trial. The first and most important lesson I learned was focusing on what I have and not on what I’ve lost.

blog family pic

Our family before I was diagnosed with ALS. (Mary still had BIG hair).

Perspective: the capacity to view things in their true relations or relative importance. (Webster’s Dictionary)

I know of many people close to my age, even some close friends, who have died of ALS, Cancer and other diseases or were killed in tragic accidents. These moms and dads have missed being able see their children growing up. They weren’t there to take pictures before prom, to watch with pride as their child graduated from high school and/or college or to witness their son or daughter’s wedding.

I force myself to think about these friends and acquaintances when I begin feeling depressed about my inability to fully participate in this thing we call life. At times like last year when my daughter got married, and I was unable to walk her down the aisle or dance with her at the reception. During difficult times like this, I make a conscious effort to think about some of these people that are no longer with us; people like my friend Rick, who died of Cancer, leaving a wife and two teenage sons. I think about another blogger named Patrick, who died of ALS in December leaving a wife and a teenage son and daughter. Sadly, Rick and Patrick won’t get the opportunity to watch with pride as their children go through graduations, weddings and other landmark events in their lives.

I think about these people every time I’m tempted to complain or get depressed about my situation. I ask myself what they’d say to me if I was to complain about things like not being able to walk my daughter down the aisle at her wedding. Would they tell me that I should be grateful for just getting to be there to watch as she walked down the aisle? Of course, Rick, Patrick and the others have gone on to heaven so I don’t know what they might say to me. But I know they would be right if they were able to tell me to be grateful that I was able to be there for all the events that they’ve missed and will miss. In a sense, I feel that I owe them; that, if for no other reason, I must be grateful for their sake.

Our son-in-law and daughters (January, 2012).

I know it’s strange for me to imagine what deceased people might say to me (to give me the proper perspective), but it works for me and, regardless of the trial that you find yourself in, we all must find ways of coping; ways of changing our perspective and attitude – ways of convincing ourselves that our life isn’t so bad after all.

“…I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.” (Philippians 4:11)

The aim of every Christian should be learning to be content in the good times and in the bad times. But, for those that hope in God, contentment does not mean we stop believing for better days ahead; it just means we’re grateful for today and that we’re going to live it to the full – even if we have to live today in a wheelchair!

“For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.” (Romans 8:24-25)

About Bill Sweeney

In 1996, at the age of 36, I was diagnosed with ALS. The neurologist gave me 3-5 years to live. 24 years later... :-) I'm completely paralyzed and unable to speak. By God's grace and the great care of my wife, I'm still here. I live to encourage and give hope to others going through difficult times.

  3. Hi Mr. Sweeney,
I love all your blogs and especially this one. It was such a great day being there for Lauren’s wedding. Every now and then I come on here to read a new blog or an old one that I liked and they always inspire/impact me. Thank you for taking the time to share your life with us and being an inspiration. I am now in nursing school and we went over ALS… a point in the lecture stated “most survive 3-5 years.” I of course had to say that I know first hand someone that has made it past 10 years since I couldn’t remember the exact years, after coming on here I must correct my statement and say 17 years!!

Again thank you for all your words of wisdom and for Lauren.. even though her and I don’t talk as much as I would like to, when we do it is like we are still in high school!

    Love,

He is a faithful Father and wants to comfort us in our questioning even when the answers feel more like consolation. I am thankful for your honest reflection of such things.

Thank you for inspiring us to fix our eyes on Christ no matter what situation we are in!

  11. Hi Bill,
Just stopped by to share that you are making a very positive difference in people’s lives by sharing your testimony. Sometimes God uses those that are not able to be examples to those who are. Lest you think I am one of the able, I am not. I live with chronic illness and disability and know firsthand the struggle to be content with what I can do and let what I can’t do be someone else’s responsibility.

Congrats on being father of the bride. That must have been amazing!

  19. Beautiful words from a well-polished spirit. Reminds me of something God gave me to say when my depressions were bone crushing: “Thank God I’m alive to feel this bad.”

I have been in several bipolar therapy groups and learned to dread that particular look on the facilitator’s face when there was an empty seat in the room. Depression and bipolar can be a terminal illness for some. It is quite eerie to be confronting a self-inflicted death of someone you know only by having the same illness. You’ve listened to their pain. You’ve cheered them on. They are so much like you….

Our loved ones will never really know what it takes for us to remain alive – and that is how it should be. I myself will never know all the ways God acted to keep me in one piece. I just know, as do you, that when we remain alive not only mortally, but most importantly, eternally alive in Christ, our labors in the Lord are not in vain. Even if that labor is just to say “Thank God I’m alive to feel this bad.”

    Blessings

I know of many people with ALS and other terminal diseases that also suffer with severe depression. This is one of the reasons I am against assisted-suicide; most people that are diagnosed with a terminal disease will go through periods of depression. I am glad you are now helping others out of the pit of despair. God bless.

  25. Hi Bill…. gratitude for what we do have is a topic very near to my heart for a number of reasons. First off, it saved my life and spared me from deep, deep depression years ago. For most of my adult life, I had no ability to filter out my self-pity and lack-focus until finally, life fell completely apart during an agonizing divorce and my response with alcohol and drug abuse.

Now, I am also careful to not take making comparisons to an extreme. I believe that comparing our circumstances to others in order to be grateful can get out of balance and bring on new forms of flawed thinking.

However, a healthy level of comparisons can genuinely help us, especially if we are stuck in a rut. For me, a life-changing experience of this came when I was missing my kids during a time when I was not functioning due to depression over divorce and the drinking I was doing in response. I had been sober a few months yet my ex would still not let kids come see me very much. I fell into deep depression and self-pity.

Then one day, I get a call from a friend who tells me another friend of ours teenage son had just tragically been killed. I immediately went to see my grieving friend. When I found myself in the company of a man who would never see his son again, my self-pity over a temporary separation from my kids became very apparent. I was shaken so deeply by my realization as a result of this comparison, that it changed my perspectives permanently.

Yet, I don’t run around looking for people to pity on a regular basis. I believe God worked through this situation, as tragic as it was, to wake me up. And not set a precedent for how I should live my life by repeatedly seeking those in greater crisis and deeper pain to compare myself to. This would be way out of balance.

Instead, I felt led by God to find value in everything around me, regardless to what others have or don’t have. Yes, I will make the occasional comparison, it is human nature. But I feel the greater lesson and greater calling is to find value and be grateful without comparisons. I have found tremendous power in this practice! It can jolt me out of the dumps and self-pity in an instant.

In this practice, I find I can be content in all things. Thanks for your enlightening and thought-provoking post.

    Ciao.

    • Thank you for sharing that powerful testimony, Chaz. As I wrote in a post titled “Comparing Yourself to Others,” I have discovered that all people compare themselves to others, it’s just human nature. I don’t think it’s realistic to tell people not to compare themselves to others, but, as you seem to have discovered, it is possible to choose the type of people we compare ourselves to. Comparing our situation to the less fortunate and those going through horrible trials like your friend, makes us feel grateful for what we have.
Obviously Christ wants us to feel empathy for others, like you felt/feel for your grieving friend, and empathy requires us to place ourselves in their situation. When we do this we see the contrast between their life and ours, so, in a sense, empathy is a healthy comparison that makes us grateful for what we have.

      Like

      • Hi Bill…. I will certainly look for your post on comparing to others. It is a topic that I have a growing curiosity about.

I agree, we can never stop comparing altogether. Agreed, it is human nature. I simply feel that in many circumstances, including my own, we can move from healthy to unhealthy comparisons quite easily without knowing it.

Healthy and unhealthy comparisons are often indistinguishable in appearance. Yet they function completely differently. And again, the habit of frequent comparisons, especially unhealthy ones, can become a toxic trait we embed in ourselves.

There is something uniquely thrilling and substantial in discovering gratitude in the absence of comparisons. In my experience anyway… and in fact, I am not even entirely sure why.

I will leave it at that and perhaps dialogue further on your other post once I’ve had a chance to read.

        Ciao,

        Chaz

You wrote; “God used my precious mom and this verse to breathe hope into me.” I have heard similar statements from other people that had their hope challenged – just one verse and one person can make all the difference! Romans 15:13 says that hope comes from the Holy Spirit, but the Holy Spirit works through God’s word and through God’s people, as you’ve discovered.

Your daughter’s are GORGEOUS and the family photos, both of them, absolutely warmed my heart. My father passed from cancer in Nov. of 2009, 2 days after my 28 birthday and months before my wedding day. Sometimes my heart aches at the thought of all the wonderful times he’s not here to witness and at that fact that my daughter won’t get to meet her grandfather here on earth. But, as you’ve so eloquently stated, we always, always have so much to be grateful for, especially being in Christ!!

I’m sorry your dad wasn’t there to walk you down the aisle… See, if a friend was complaining about her dad not being able to walk her down the aisle because he was in a wheelchair, you might not say it, but you would likely be thinking that she should be grateful that he was able to be there. That’s why I’m grateful.

Oh I hope the comment makes them smile. 🙂 But you know something, you’re right, It may not be something I’d readily admit, but deep down I’d probably be thinking “if only you knew how fortunate you truly are.” I will say that I’m constantly amazed at how God gives us what we need and want, even if it doesn’t come in the way we expect it. Being a daddy’s girl myself, I know your daughter’s are thrilled to have the first man who captured their hearts right there with them…in any way. And as for me, I had my stepdad to walk me down the aisle and dance the first dance with, and even though it was never what I expected, it was a beautiful blessing!! I hope you have a wonderful, wonderful week!!

This Having the Right Perspective post, ie: the line: “I think about these people every time I’m tempted to complain or get depressed about my situation” resonates with me.

The Lord uses in a poweful way, the people I think about, my friends with multiple health challenges, to move my heart to gain perspective on suffering, mine and other as well. He moves me to serve or lay down my life for these friends, even as I myself face daily health challenges. Denying myself doesn’t always come easy, and yet doing so in Jesus name is so very rewarding.

I agree with you, denying ourselves doesn’t come easy; sometimes it feels more like living in denial:-) But, as I’m sure you’ve discovered, even though denying ourselves (living for God and others instead of for ourselves), is a difficult choice, it is a choice; a choice I have to renew daily and sometimes hourly. Thankfully it’s a choice God gives us the grace and power to make.

When I hear the word “content,” it makes me think people like the rich man in Luke chapter 12; someone that’s satisfied and has no intention of using his “talents” for anything other than relaxing. That’s not the Christian kind of contentment; we must always be hoping for better tomorrow’s – for ourselves and others.

  73. I am so glad you have a beautiful family to bring you joy. Thank you for sharing the pictures of your girls and new son. What a blessing for you to be there for your daughter’s wedding!

This post is a blessing for me today in the face of things I have been experiencing. Thank you for this edifying and encouraging post. What do I have to be gloomy about? Well, actually nothing! It’s all a matter of perspective! “Whatsover things are lovely…whatsoever things are of good report…and if there be any praise, think on these things!” Philippians 4:8

There is a song I recently came across on Youtube that has been a blessing to me. Perhaps you would like it too. The name of it is, “Be Strong,” by the Heritage Singers.

    Bless you Brother

  74. Bill, every time you post, I stop and ponder the profound thoughts you share. You always stop me – you stop my day – and I become refocused. I am going to share your blog with my readers and I know that they too, will stop…and think about contentment and gratitude. You are a blessing to me and I enjoy each and every blog. I loved the pictures of your beautiful family. Diane
