Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

On the last day of 2016, I was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance because, even with my breathing mask on, I couldn’t breathe. The doctors diagnosed me with an Upper Respiratory Infection. I didn’t think I would live to see the first day of 2017. I thought the last hours of 2016 would be the last hours of my life.

Obviously, I didn’t die. By God’s grace I lived to see another year. Every day of 2017 has been like a bonus to me, every day God gives me is a bonus. People with ALS are not supposed to live for 21 years. I hope that God will let me hang around for 2018.

I wasn’t planning on posting again this year, but I was sitting here and thought I’d type a short post to wish my blog followers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

“For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore.” (Isaiah 9:6-7)
(It’s so amazing to me that the Prophet Isaiah wrote the above 700 years before the birth of Jesus).

About Bill Sweeney

In 1996, at the age of 36, I was diagnosed with ALS. The neurologist gave me 3-5 years to live. 24 years later... :-) I'm completely paralyzed and unable to speak. By God's grace and the great care of my wife, I'm still here. I live to encourage and give hope to others going through difficult times.

    • Thank you for your comments. I agree with you about trials changing our perspective on life for the better. So much seems so trivial when we’re going through a trial. I’m so glad you are here to tell the tale. I hope you have a great 2018 in every aspect of your life.

  9. A hearty AMEN to previous comments. You’ve impacted us all, Bill–your strong faith, your positive attitude, your delightful humor in spite of very difficult circumstances. And then there’s the ripple effect. I have told your story to others, as I’m sure many of your readers have. As for the passage of scripture you shared today, I, too, marvel at the exactness of the prophecies surrounding Jesus’ birth, so long before the event occurred. Praise God for the hope prompted by such words too!

    Beautiful word, beautiful Christmas decorations.
Not all things in this world are beautiful and encouraging. His strength and the things that are touched by Him are!
Thank you for being obedient to His touch!

  13. Merry Christmas, dear Bill, and warm wishes for a wonderful 2018 for you and Mary. The photo’s a great glimpse of you in your beautiful home. I listened to a radio program, while cooking today, about the prophecies concerning the birth and life of Jesus. It’s amazing how specific details were foretold. I look forward to His glorious return. It’s comforting to know it will be just as He said it would be.

  15. I just found your blog! That’s an amazing testimony of God’s faithfulness in your life. You have inspired me to regard every day God gives me on this earth as a bonus. Thank you for sharing God’s faithfulness also in His prophecy of Jesus. Amen, and Amen!
Your life is a testimony to me of living out Philippians 1:20-25
“According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I
shall choose I wot not. For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you. And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue
with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith;”
    Jesus is faithful

    • Thank you, Michael.
I just read this passage this morning. “To live is Christ…” Christ in me and working through me, this is my number one goal for whatever time I have left on this earth.
Thank you for reading and for your comments.

You’ve got a wonderful voice of hope in the midst of the challenge of what you walk through every day. And you see each day as a bonus. What a beautiful reflection of God’s grace in and through you. May this Christmas be a time of joyous reflecting on His great gift of hope. And may your new year be one where you see His ministry through you continue to grow. I’m grateful for you, my friend.
