Are You A Fool Like Me?

I’m sure it’s the little boy still hiding in my 57-year-old paralyzed body, but I enjoy trying to pull off a good April Fools Day joke on Mary. In our thirty-two years of marriage, I probably have a 75% success rate.

It can be a real challenge to carry out a successful April fools joke with ALS because I can’t speak so I have to attempt to fool her via email or using my computer’s (no inflection) robot voice (the only “voice” I’ve had for the last twenty years).

As I’m sure you know, April Fools Day and Easter (the day we celebrate Christ’s resurrection from the dead) fall on the same day this year. The two have not fallen on the same day since 1956.

Are Christians fools for believing that Christ was literally raised from the dead?

Atheists, agnostics and those of other faiths, believe it is foolish to believe that a man who had been dead for three days would rise up and walk out of His tomb.

Lee Strobel (author of “The Case For Christ“) put it this way:

“When I was an atheist and legal editor of The Chicago Tribune, I would have smirked at the fact that Easter this year falls on April Fools’ Day. Because back then, I thought that anyone would have to be a fool to believe that Jesus literally rose from the dead.”

Lee Strobel is now a Christian Apologist, an Associate Pastor of a large church in The Woodlands, Texas, and a best-selling author. His latest book, “The Case For Miracles” came out on March 27th.

Back when Lee was an atheist, he became furious when his wife told him that she had become a Christian. He set out to prove that Christianity was the biggest hoax in history. He began his research by rightly determining that the foundation of Christianity is the resurrection of Christ.

As an award-winning investigative journalist and a Yale-educated attorney, he reasoned, that he was more than qualified to expose this hoax. Lee spent two years researching historical documents and interviewing experts on the resurrection for the book he planned to title “The Case Against Christ.”

After completing his exhaustive research, Lee made a commitment to follow Christ and titled his best-selling book, “The Case For Christ.”

“A young man who wishes to remain a sound Atheist cannot be too careful of his reading” C.S. Lewis

Way back when I was young and knew everything, I considered myself to be an agnostic. I really didn’t have an interest in anything that had to do with “religion” so, without even knowing the definition of the word, It seemed like a safe and non-offensive thing to be so I chose that label for myself.

“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But a wise man is he who listens to counsel.” (Proverbs 12:15)

For the record, the definition of agnostic is: a person who holds the view that any ultimate reality (such as God) is unknown and probably unknowable; one who is not committed to believing in either the existence or the non-existence of God or a god.

“The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God…” (Psalm 14:1)

But, Lee Strobel, C.S. Lewis and so many others have demonstrated that “ultimate reality,” like the resurrection of Christ, is not “unknowable.”

“Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell — and great was its fall.” (Matthew 7:26-27)

We’re all fools in the eyes of someone; either in the eyes of man, or in the eyes of God.

It’s not a great selling point, and it’s a very humbling thing to do, but a follower of Christ is one who chooses to be a fool in the eyes of an unbelieving world. Yes, Christians know that we are viewed as fools in the eyes of an unbelieving world. The Bible told us about this too:

“We are fools for Christ’s sake…we are without honor…when we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure; when we are slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become as the scum of the world, the dregs of all things…”
(1 Corinthians 4:10-14)

Seriously, this Easter, I really hope that atheists, agnostics, and all those who have dismissed the resurrection of Christ would take a new look at this event that has reshaped history and transformed millions upon millions of hearts and minds in every corner of the world.

Placing your hope in Christ is truly Unshakable Hope. It’s hope for this life, and for the next.

“…if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.” (Romans 8:11)

About Bill Sweeney

In 1996, at the age of 36, I was diagnosed with ALS. The neurologist gave me 3-5 years to live. 24 years later... :-) I'm completely paralyzed and unable to speak. By God's grace and the great care of my wife, I'm still here. I live to encourage and give hope to others going through difficult times.

  5. Great post Bill. I really enjoyed reading it. I like when you said, “… a follower of Christ is one who chooses to be a fool in the eyes of an unbelieving world.” And I couldn’t agree more.

As Christians, we are fools to the people around us who cannot understand how we can love and worship Jesus Christ.

I never took the chance to say, “Thank you” for following my blog all of those months ago and am now getting around to your little “pocket” of the internet.

      • I loved homeschooling. One of my sons recently told me he’s glad we did because it helped him avoid some temptations he wasn’t so sure he would have been able to withstand at such a young age. God is good. You’re welcome for the re-tweet. Thank you for sharing my post too. 🙂

          • The online homeschooling community is huge. There’s no shortage of info and support out there. The most important thing is to invite God to be the school Principal. He’s a gracious Leader who brings out the best in the teachers and students. Each family is unique in how they approach homeschooling. It’s a wonderful way to bond with your kids–and them with each other. Even though my adult children don’t believe what I believe anymore (for now), we are close and we all share a love of music and classics written by Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. I’m grateful for those years of amazing grace. Many seeds were planted. They knew their Bibles better than many of their church friends because we spent a lot of time reading it and narrating it back to each other.

          • One of the best parts was reading to my children and teaching them to read. We found easy reading success using a simple book another homeschool mom suggested. It tells you exactly what to do. It appealed to me because I hate complicated curriculum. • Thank you, Mia. Your Pastor is right, to unbelievers, it is foolishness to believe that Jesus was raised from the dead. To believe that Jesus is the Messiah takes more than human reasoning, it takes a revelation from the Holy Spirit:
“Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood (human intellect) did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 16:16-17)

  17. WONDERFUL post, Bill. When an investigative reporter like Lee Strobel puts his skills to work to discover truth, and uncovers pages and pages of knowledge and analysis from experts that proves Jesus’ resurrection, we’d be fools not to at least consider what he uncovered. I didn’t know he’d written a new book about miracles; ‘will have to check it out. Meanwhile, may your Easter celebration be a memorable one, Bill, filled with joy, laughter, and goosebumps for the glorious reality that HE IS RISEN!

  26. Someone at my liberal school mentioned that April Fools’ Day was on Easter. I didn’t’ know what to say – it was lunch time and we eat together in my middle school. But the joke is on the true fools…yet a joke with a way out to a happy ending if they want. Wish I could have said something FOR Christ. I admit that since I ‘live’ with these teacher colleagues day in and day out, I am more of an encourager to those who are not hostile to Christ and might be an occasional churchgoer. I bless God for giving you the desire AND the tech ability to write these posts. Thank you, Bill. I can imagine that it takes a LOT of energy.

    • Thank you for your comments, Maria. I struggle with technology, it’s very frustrating.
Having been agnostic and mocking Christians myself (I still do sometimes :-)), I don’t take it personally. Christ told us we’d be persecuted and mocked – two thousand years ago today, the enemies of Jesus dressed Him up like a court jester (a “fool”), with a royal robe and a crown of thorns. Then they mocked Him, spit in His face, beat Him… Then they took off His robe and they gave Him 39 lashes on His back. Witnesses say that He was unrecognizable! Then, they nailed Him to a cross and the crowds mocked Him some more. Then He died for your sins and for my mountain of sins.
BUT, then Sunday morning came! Happy Resurrection Day, Maria!

  29. I remember the first April Fools joke to which I fell prey. When I was little, my Mom told my sisters and me an elephant was outside. When we ran to look out the window, she said, “April Fools!” and explained what it meant.

Reading your post and learning more about you and your playful heart makes me smile. I enjoy some good-natured fun as well! I, too, don’t mind being a fool for Christ as long as I am not being foolish and thinking myself wise and learned. Because Christian scholars exist on various sides of primary doctrines, one of my heartfelt prayers is to know the truth, because what we believe affects our perspective and the effectiveness of our witness and testimony. Thanks, Bill! Happy Resurrection Day!!

  31. Great post Bill.

“We’re all fools in the eyes of someone; either in the eyes of man, or in the eyes of God.” Them is some good words – as they say in Baltimore.

You know, the longer I live the more clear this picture of God becomes that Jesus is coming back for a bride that has proven herself faithful and (as you so well articulated) is “a fool”, falling head-over-heels for the “Unshakable Hope” that is to be found in this walk of faith.

It has been said: “We are not worthy, but we are NOT WITHOUT worth”.

Something very special happens when someone touches the heart of God. I believe He is touched by your life of faith & hope. Keep on keeping on!

May you & your family have a blessed Easter.

  33. There are so many facets of our faith in Jesus where our minds and hearts grasp onto the reality of what has not been seen, yet we see, what is not fully understood, yet we know and what has not yet been fully realized but we have tasted and now rest confidently in Him. Jesus rose from the dead and so shall we. This is the testimony of Jesus, the Son of God and God’s witness to us. Our celebration and remembrance of His Resurrection at Easter is our homage and adoration to our God, King and Risen Saviour. Have a blessed and joyous Easter Bill, to both you and yours. Grace and blessings!

It’s kind of cracking me up a little bit that I was considering using the exact phrase you did (“Way back when I was young and knew everything…”) in a similar way. But oh yes, let it be said we were fools for Christ if only He is glorified in us! Happy Resurrection Sunday, my brother! ❤
